In answer to a recent question (and first in a series of character profiles...): Who, exactly, is Astrid?
Here's what we know as of the end of Season 1:
Name: Astrid
Real Name/Alias: Frances May Haven ("Trashed")
Nicknames: Cherry Pie, Red, Little Red Riding Hood ("Arrived")
Family of Origin: Astrid has a troubled relationship with her father, whom she didn't see for a duration of several years ("Settled").
She also notes that she has a little brother in "Mirrored."
Career: Astrid is an aspiring singer-songwriter. One of her compositions is "The House Between" ("Settled"), which comes back to haunt her during her captivity in the house.
Other information about Astrid's singing career: she is known to have "groupies" ("Arrived") and spent her last two paychecks renting a studio to record her latest album ("Arrived.")
This is all information she willingly provides (to Arlo, upon their first meeting). But - importantly - we only have her word it is true. It is not confirmed by anyone else.
Character Factoids:
Astrid's last memories before arriving in the house are from September of the year 1974 ("Trashed")
Sometime in 1974, Astrid attempted suicide after a failed reconciliation attempt with her father ("Settled"). She drew herself a bath, got in the tub...and slit her wrists.
Astrid sometimes quotes Scripture ("Visited," "Mirrored") and comes from a Fundamentalist Christian background.
Astrid's alter ego is, according to Bill Clark's memory in "Trashed," the "mother of Project Habitat."
She was one of a select group of people who could "alter" their reality without benefit of instrumentation or implantation.
Evidence of that unusual and powerful ability is visible in the climax of "Settled." when Astrid makes a telephone call from the house...that saves herself.
Also, according to "Vitality," the house-entity, she shares some DNA in common with Astrid, or more correctly, Frances May Haven ("Departed.)"
Character Hint: In the third episode of Season Two, "Reunited," a character will arrive with more "information" (if this character can be trusted...) about Astrid's alter ego, Frances May Haven.
Stay Tuned..
